Garage Door Remote Not Working
Why did my garage door remote stop working?
What is actually causing it
Most likely first, based on what our crews find on the call.
01Dead battery
By far the most common cause. Most remotes take a CR2032 or CR2016 coin cell. Heat shortens their life badly, so a remote left clipped to a visor in Fresno or Palm Desert will not last as long as the package claims.
Safe to check yourself, with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
02Remote lost its programming
A power event or an accidental long-press of the LEARN button can clear the opener's memory. Re-learning a remote is a two-button, thirty-second procedure documented in the manual for every major brand.
Safe to check yourself, with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
03Out of range or blocked antenna
The antenna wire should hang straight down from the powerhead, not be coiled up or tucked into the housing. If it works from ten feet and not from the street, that is the antenna.
Safe to check yourself, with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
04Radio interference
LED shop lights, some Wi-Fi gear and nearby transmitters swamp the 300–390 MHz band openers use. If range collapsed the week you changed the garage light bulbs, change them back and see.
Safe to check yourself, with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
05Failed receiver board
If the wall button works, every remote and the keypad are all dead, and re-learning fails, the receiver section has gone. That is a board.
Do not attempt this yourself. It is under spring or cable load and it injures people every year — this one is a licensed-technician job.
06Rolling-code mismatch with a replacement remote
A universal remote has to match the opener's rolling-code generation. Buying the wrong generation is the usual reason a brand-new remote will not learn.
