Garage Door Keypad Not Working
Why won't my garage door keypad open the door?
What is actually causing it
Most likely first, based on what our crews find on the call.
01Dead 9-volt or coin-cell battery
Outdoor keypads live in direct sun on a west-facing jamb for years. A battery that reads fine at rest can still be unable to deliver the current the transmitter needs.
Safe to check yourself, with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
02Keypad lost its PIN after a power event
Reprogramming is a documented sequence — press LEARN on the powerhead, then enter the PIN and ENTER on the keypad within thirty seconds. Every major brand publishes it.
Safe to check yourself, with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
03Worn or water-damaged keypad membrane
If some digits register and others never do, the rubber membrane is done. Sun and sprinkler overspray both kill them. A new keypad is inexpensive.

04Opener memory full or wiped
Openers hold a limited number of learned devices. Once full, the next device silently fails to learn. Clearing memory and re-learning everything is the fix — and it means re-teaching every remote in the household.

05Keypad mounted out of range
Stucco with wire lath, a metal jamb or a long masonry wall attenuates the signal badly. If the keypad works when held near the opener and not on the jamb, that is the answer.

06Failed receiver on the opener
When remotes are dead too, the fault is the opener's receiver, not the keypad.
Do not attempt this yourself. It is under spring or cable load and it injures people every year — this one is a licensed-technician job.
