Garage Door Very Loud
Why is my garage door so loud, and can it be made quieter?
What is actually causing it
Most likely first, based on what our crews find on the call.
01Worn steel rollers
Builder-grade steel rollers with exposed bearings are the loudest component on most California tract-house doors. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings are the single biggest noise reduction available, and they are a routine tune-up swap.
Do not attempt this yourself. It is under spring or cable load and it injures people every year — this one is a licensed-technician job.
02Loose hinges, brackets and lag bolts
Thousands of cycles back the fasteners out and every joint in the door starts to rattle. Snugging visible hinge screws is reasonable homeowner maintenance; anything on the spring shaft or the bottom bracket is not.
Safe to check yourself, with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
03Chain-drive opener on an attached bedroom wall
Chain drives transmit noise into the structure. On a two-story house with a bedroom over the garage, a belt-drive or wall-mount jackshaft unit is a different experience entirely.

04No isolation between the rail and the ceiling joists
Rigid angle iron bolted straight to a joist turns the framing into a soundboard. Rubber isolation pads at the hanger are cheap and effective.

05Dry spring shaft bearings
A rhythmic squeal that tracks the shaft's rotation is the end bearings. A drop of oil on the bearing, never on the spring's outside face, is part of a normal service.

06Door out of balance
An unbalanced door slams the last few inches and bangs the sections together. That is not a noise problem — it is a counterbalance problem that happens to be audible.
