Garage Door Opener Light Blinking
Why is my garage door opener light blinking and the door won't close?
What is actually causing it
Most likely first, based on what our crews find on the call.
01Safety sensor fault — the opener light flashing repeatedly
On Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers the work light flashing ten times when you press the close button means the safety sensors are blocked, misaligned or miswired. Clear the beam, wipe both lenses and check that both sensor LEDs are on steady.
Safe to check yourself, with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
02Sensor wire pinched, cut or reversed
A dark sensor LED points at the wiring rather than at the alignment. Staples through the insulation behind drywall are the usual culprit, and rodents are the second.
Do not attempt this yourself. It is under spring or cable load and it injures people every year — this one is a licensed-technician job.
03Diagnostic LED blink code on the powerhead
Modern openers also carry a separate diagnostic LED — on many LiftMaster units a pair of up/down arrow LEDs blink a two-number code that identifies the exact fault. Count both numbers before you call; it saves diagnostic time and sometimes the whole visit.
Safe to check yourself, with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
04LEARN button LED lit or blinking
A LEARN LED that is on means the opener is waiting to pair a device — usually because the button was pressed by accident. It times out on its own, or you can press it once to cancel.
Safe to check yourself, with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
05Battery backup fault
California openers carry a backup battery, and most units flash a light and beep when that battery has aged out. It is a consumable, typically good for a few years, and replacing it is straightforward.
Safe to check yourself, with the door closed and the opener unplugged.
06Logic board fault
A code that persists after the sensors, the wiring and the battery all check out is the board reporting itself. That is a part, not a setting.
Do not attempt this yourself. It is under spring or cable load and it injures people every year — this one is a licensed-technician job.
