There is a real line, and it is 3,000 feet
Californians argue about what counts as 'coastal.' The building code has a number. ICC 600-2020 §504.3, referenced through Title 24, requires corrosion-resistant fasteners and connectors within 3,000 feet of a saltwater coastline, with stricter requirements in the first 300 feet. That rule is about structural fasteners rather than garage doors — but if the code thinks 3,000 feet is where salt starts mattering to steel, it is where it starts mattering to your lift cables too.
How salt actually kills a cable
A lift cable is a stranded galvanized assembly. Salt aerosol works into the interstices between strands, and corrosion begins inside the rope where nobody can see it, concentrated at the bottom bracket where water pools and sprinkler overspray lands. By the time the outside looks fuzzy, load-bearing strands have already gone. The international corrosivity scale, ISO 9223, puts genuine marine exposure at its most aggressive categories, and hot-dip galvanized service life there is a fraction of what it is inland.
The first symptom is a door that hangs crooked
A corroded cable does not usually announce itself with a bang. It stretches, slips or parts a strand, one side drops a quarter of an inch, and the door starts to look very slightly not-level. That is the moment to call. The next stage is the door coming off its track, which is a much larger bill.
What to specify on the coast
Heavily galvanized or stainless lift cable, galvanized or coated springs, nylon rollers with sealed bearings, and stainless or hot-dip fasteners on the bottom brackets and track. The upcharge is small measured against a derailment, and DASMA's own guidance on spring cycle life makes the point that a corroded, binding coil never reaches the cycle count it was rated for.

Santa Monica through the South Bay, the Orange County beach cities from Seal Beach to San Clemente, the San Diego coast, Santa Cruz and the Monterey Peninsula, the San Luis Obispo and Pismo corridor, and the Humboldt and Del Norte coast. Homes in the first few hundred feet of the water, especially those that also take irrigation spray at the door, are on a materially shorter maintenance cycle than the same house five miles inland.
The maintenance interval that actually helps
Annual inspection with the cables specifically examined at the bottom bracket and at the drum, plus light lubrication of the bearings and springs. On the coast this is not an upsell; it is the difference between replacing a cable on a Tuesday and replacing a door section on a Saturday.
